Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!)

Mission Statement:

SOS! is a private/public initiative to document every piece of publicly accessible outdoor sculpture in the United States and its special jurisdictions and to raise awareness among local groups of the need to care for this precious legacy.

Administrators:

Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) is a joint effort of the National Museum of American Art, The Smithsonian Institution, and The National Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Property.

  • Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!): Outdoor sculpture, is a readily accessible cultural legacy which combines history and art. Found in almost every community, many works suffer neglect, the effects of pollution, and vandalism. SOS! aims to enact a broad based conservation project which is currently in the cataloging stage. Volunteers involved have been recruited from the arts and historic preservation groups, but, anyone can take part. To get involved, contact Lynn Clark at lclark@nic.org, or call 800-422-4612.
